Happy Independence Day

Threads of Freedom: A Founder’s 7 Pledges for a Truly Independent India

The Feeling That Unfurls with Our Flag

I still remember the feeling from my school days—the collective hush as the rope was pulled, the silent anticipation, and then the sudden burst of colour as the saffron, white, and green unfurled against the blue sky. That moment, followed by the swell of voices singing the national anthem, is a feeling of pride that is imprinted on my heart.

Every year on August 15th, we wish each other a Happy Independence Day, and we do so with genuine joy. But as I’ve grown, and as I’ve worked with artisans who are the custodians of our culture, I’ve come to ask a deeper question: What does it mean to be truly free?

True independence is not just a date in a history book. It is a living, breathing commitment. It is a fabric woven not just of political freedom, but of personal, social, and emotional liberty. It is the courage to uplift others and the grace to stay rooted in our values. This Independence Day, I invite you to join me in making 7 personal pledges—the threads with which we can weave a stronger, kinder, and truly independent nation.

1. Weave with the Thread of Compassion

Freedom is incomplete if our hearts remain captive to indifference. Compassion is the strongest fibre in our national fabric. It is the invisible thread that connects us beyond caste, creed, or circumstance. A helping hand extended to someone in need, a patient word in a moment of chaos, a moment of understanding for a different point of view—these are the small, powerful acts that strengthen the soul of our nation.

2. Embrace the Colours of Our Unity

The unparalleled beauty of India lies in its magnificent diversity. We are a nation of a thousand languages, a million flavours, and countless traditions. To respect this is not just polite; it is patriotism in its purest form. When we truly embrace our differences, we act like the master artisan who picks up different blocks, different colours, and different motifs, knowing that each unique element is essential to creating the final masterpiece.

3. Empower the Hands That Build Our Nation

A nation’s strength is in its economic self-reliance. This begins with supporting our own. When we choose to buy from local artisans and support traditional crafts, we do more than just make a purchase. We empower a family, we preserve a centuries-old heritage, and we cast a vote for cultural continuity. Every hand-blocked garment from SA Fab is a testament to this belief—it is a statement of pride in the skill of Indian hands.

4. Share the Light of Knowledge

An educated nation is an empowered nation. True education is not just about degrees; it is the gift of critical thinking. A mind that can think freely is a mind that cannot be chained by misinformation or prejudice. Let us pledge to share knowledge where we can, to mentor the youth, to encourage questions, and to foster a spirit of lifelong learning in our own homes and communities.

5. Stand for Dignity, with Grace

True freedom includes the courage to stand up for what is right—but to do so with the grace and respect that our culture teaches us. Voicing our support for gender equality, for safe and inclusive spaces, and for the fair treatment of all beings is our duty. Let our voices be instruments of hope and constructive change, not of anger or division.

6. Nurture the Land We Call Home

What is freedom without a healthy, thriving planet to enjoy it on? Our love for our nation must include a deep love for its land, its rivers, and its air. Conserving water, reducing waste, planting trees, and choosing sustainable products are all profound patriotic acts. At SA Fab, our commitment to eco-friendly practices and natural dyes is born from this love—a promise to our Mother India.

7. Celebrate the Soul of Our Culture

Our festivals, our music, our crafts, and our traditional wear are not “old-fashioned.” They are the living, breathing soul of India. They are the stories our ancestors told, passed down to us. By celebrating them with joy, by wearing our culture with pride, we ensure that this vibrant, beautiful soul is passed on, strong and cherished, to the generations to come.

A Freedom We Wear Every Day

This Independence Day, let us celebrate not just with flags in our hands, but with freedom in our hearts and responsibility in our actions. A truly independent nation is not built in parliaments alone. It is handcrafted every single day in our homes, our conversations, our schools, and our streets.

Let us wear our freedom not as a banner for one day, but as the very fabric of our everyday lives.

From my heart and the entire SA Fab family, I wish you a thoughtful and Happy Independence Day. May we always wear our culture with pride and our humanity with grace.
