Block Printed Long Skirts — Hand Printed in Bagru, Jaipur

Every block printed long skirt in this collection is made by hand in Bagru, Rajasthan. This is the village where the Chhipa community has practised natural dye block printing for over 450 years. A Chhipa artisan presses a hand-carved wooden block into natural dye paste and stamps it across pure cotton, panel by panel, until the full 28-panel skirt carries a complete print. No machine run. No digital shortcut. Every piece is genuinely handmade.

We dye with plants and minerals: madder root for deep reds and terracotta, indigo plant for rich blues and navies, harda seed for warm yellows and sage greens, and iron solution for blacks and greys. Because these dyes are plant-based with no synthetic azo compounds, they are gentle against the skin across full-day wear. They also age gracefully — deepening slightly over time rather than fading flat.

Each skirt in this collection is cut from a full 5-metre flair across 28 panels. That volume is what gives these skirts their dramatic, sweeping silhouette — the kind that moves with you as you walk and fans out when you turn. This is not the narrow or semi-flared cut of most mass-market maxi skirts. It is a genuine full-flair skirt, and the difference is visible at first glance.

What’s in This Collection

10 pure cotton block printed long skirts — each a 28-panel maxi in a distinct colour palette and print motif. Here is what makes each one different:

Floral Block Print Maxi Skirts

Our floral styles carry the classic Bagru vocabulary — trailing botanical motifs, small repeat florals, delicate leaf trails — in natural dye colours on a pure cotton ground. These are the most versatile prints in the collection. They work across casual wear, festive occasions, travel, and resort dressing. Our airy light blue floral with deep blue border, soft cream earthy floral with black border, soft ivory earthy floral pleated with geometric border, and the vibrant red long skirt with green border all fall into this group.

Geometric & Traditional Block Print Skirts

Our geometric and traditional styles carry bolder, more graphic patterns — zigzag trails, angular fills, interlocking geometric grounds. In contrast to the floral styles, these read more structured and striking. They pair most naturally with a plain, fitted top that lets the print lead. Our blue and white zigzag with light border, deep navy blue geometric with aqua border, and rich black traditional with red border sit in this group. The contrasting border on each of these styles — in a different natural dye colour — creates a strong visual finish at the hem that is a signature of our skirt design.

Paneled & A-Line Skirts

Several styles in this collection feature distinct silhouette details. Our vibrant red and blue paneled maxi with golden border uses alternating colour panels across the 28-panel construction — creating a dramatic colour-block effect that is entirely natural dye, not printed. Our deep navy blue floral A-line skirt uses a slightly more tapered construction than the full maxi styles, creating a cleaner line through the hips before flaring at the mid-thigh. As a result, it is the most structured silhouette in the collection and the best choice for office-adjacent occasions.

What Makes a 28-Panel 5-Metre Skirt Different

Most printed maxi skirts sold online use 4–8 panels of fabric. Ours use 28. Here is why that matters:

Each of the 28 panels is cut on a slight wedge — wider at the hem, narrower at the waist. When sewn together, the cumulative hem width reaches 5 metres of flair. This creates a genuinely circular, dramatic sweep at the bottom rather than the stiff or boxy hem that fewer panels produce. When you walk, the fabric moves in a continuous wave. When you turn, it fans out fully. The silhouette is completely different from a standard maxi skirt — and that difference is immediately visible.

Furthermore, because each panel is individually block printed before construction, the print register aligns correctly across every seam. This is only possible with hand block printing — a digital or screen-printed panel construction would show visible colour banding at the seams. Instead, the natural dye prints on our skirts flow continuously across the full circumference of the hem.

Which Skirt for Which Occasion

Casual & Everyday Wear

Our floral and botanical styles — light blue floral, soft cream earthy floral, vibrant red long skirt — are the everyday workhorses of this collection. Pair with a plain fitted cotton top or a simple block printed cotton shirt worn half-tucked. The full flair of the skirt means the top can stay minimal — the skirt carries the look on its own.

Festive & Ethnic Occasions

Our traditional motif and paneled styles — rich black traditional with red border, vibrant red and blue paneled with golden border — carry a festive register without embellishment. Pair with a block printed kurti or a fitted choli-style top, add a block printed dupatta across one shoulder, and the outfit is complete for Navratri, Diwali, family functions, or wedding receptions. Since all our pieces use the same natural dye palette, skirts and kurtis from different styles coordinate naturally.

Resort & Travel Wear

Pure cotton packs lightly and does not hold wrinkles. Our lighter-ground styles — airy light blue floral, elegant ivory floral, soft ivory pleated — are the best travel choices because the lighter colours stay cool in direct sun and the floral prints work across beach, market, and evening dinner settings without changing. Moreover, the 5-metre flair creates natural airflow around the legs in warm coastal or humid weather. These are genuinely the most comfortable warm-weather skirts in the collection.

Office-Adjacent & Creative Workwear

Our A-line navy blue floral style and geometric navy blue skirt with aqua border carry the most composed, structured aesthetic in the collection. Pair with a fitted plain blouse or a block printed waist coat over a plain shirt for a creative-professional look. These styles suit design studios, cultural institutions, and any workplace that encourages considered ethnic wear.

How to Style a Block Printed Long Skirt

With a Plain Fitted Top

The simplest and most effective approach. A plain white, cream, or black fitted top against a full-print block printed skirt lets the skirt carry the visual weight. Add flat juttis or kolhapuri sandals and nothing else — the block print and the skirt’s movement do all the work.

With a Block Printed Top in the Same Palette

Pair a block print skirt with a block printed cotton top in a complementary colour from the same natural dye palette — for example, an indigo-ground top with a madder red skirt, or a black-print top with a cream-ground skirt. Because our natural dye palette is consistent across the collection, these combinations coordinate naturally without needing to be from the same set.

Day to Evening in Two Changes

Wear the skirt with a plain cotton top and flat sandals during the day. For the evening, swap to heeled juttis, tuck in the top, and add a statement earring. These three changes shift the same skirt from casual day wear to evening ethnic dressing without any costume change. This is where the value of a well-made block printed skirt becomes clear — it moves across occasions more naturally than a heavily embellished synthetic piece.

Why a Handblock Printed Cotton Skirt Is Different

Most printed maxi skirts online are digitally or screen printed on synthetic fabrics — viscose, polyester, or rayon. The prints are uniform and the fabric does not breathe the way natural cotton does. Ours are the opposite on every count.

We cut every skirt from pure cotton — no blends, no synthetic fill. Pure cotton breathes freely, wicks moisture, and stays physically cooler than synthetic alternatives in Indian summers. Furthermore, the 5-metre panel construction means there is constant air movement around the legs rather than fabric clinging against the skin.

The printing happens in Bagru, at the hands of Chhipa community artisans who have inherited this craft across generations. We work directly with these artisans — no factory intermediary, no wholesale markup. Fair wages go directly to the craftspeople. As a result, each skirt carries a real, verifiable origin: Ganga Vihar, Bagru, Jaipur — a 450-year craft tradition behind every panel.

How to Care for Your Block Printed Cotton Skirt

  • First wash separately in cold water. Some natural dye release is normal in the first 2–3 washes. This is excess dye clearing, not fading. Always wash the skirt separately first.
  • Hand wash or gentle cold machine cycle. Avoid hot water — it weakens natural dye bonds. After the first few washes, a cold gentle cycle works fine.
  • Mild detergent only. Harsh detergents strip natural dyes faster. A gentle handwash liquid is sufficient. Never use bleach.
  • Do not wring. The 28-panel construction can distort at the waistband if wrung roughly. Gently press excess water out instead.
  • Dry hanging in shade. Direct sunlight degrades natural dye molecules over time. Shade-dry by hanging from the waistband to let the full flair dry evenly.
  • Iron on medium heat, on the reverse. Cotton irons easily. Ironing on the printed side can flatten the print texture — so always reverse-iron.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I wash naturally dyed block printed cotton skirts?

Cold wash separately for the first 2–3 washes — some natural dye release is normal and is not fading. Use mild detergent only, never bleach. Gently press out excess water rather than wringing. Dry hanging in shade from the waistband so the full 28-panel flair dries evenly. With this care, natural dyes deepen slightly over time rather than fading flat — so your skirt can look richer after a year of wear than it did on day one.

What tops pair best with a flared block printed long skirt?

A plain fitted top in a colour from the skirt’s natural dye palette is the most versatile pairing — white or cream with any print, black with lighter ground prints, indigo or madder red with neutral ground prints. For a more ethnic look, a short block printed kurti that falls just at the waistband creates a complete traditional look. Avoid oversized or boxy tops with a full-flair skirt — the volume of the 28-panel construction means the top needs to stay fitted to create a defined proportion.

Are these skirts suitable for hot summer weather?

Yes — and they are specifically designed for it. Pure cotton breathes freely and wicks moisture away from the skin. The 5-metre panel construction creates constant air circulation around the legs rather than trapping heat. The natural dyes also have no synthetic coating on the fabric surface, so the cotton breathes even more freely than chemically dyed cotton. In contrast, synthetic maxi skirts trap heat and cling when the fabric warms against the skin. Our cotton block print skirts are genuinely comfortable through full summer days outdoors.

What is the difference between a 28-panel skirt and a regular maxi skirt?

A regular maxi skirt typically uses 4–8 fabric panels. As a result, the hem circumference is limited and the skirt has a relatively narrow or semi-circular sweep. Our skirts use 28 individual wedge-cut panels, which produces a full 5-metre hem circumference — a genuinely circular, dramatic flair that moves completely differently from a standard maxi cut. The difference is visible when you stand still and dramatic when you walk or turn. Furthermore, the 28-panel construction allows the block print to flow continuously across every seam, since each panel is individually printed before construction.

Can I wear a block printed long skirt to the office?

For most traditional offices, a full-flair 5-metre skirt is casual or ethnic wear rather than formal professional wear. However, for creative industries, cultural institutions, educational environments, and relaxed workplaces, our A-line navy blue floral skirt and the deep navy blue geometric skirt with aqua border carry the most composed, structured aesthetic in the collection. Pair either with a fitted blouse tucked in and simple footwear for the most office-appropriate version of this skirt. For a more formal ethnic office look, our block printed cotton suits are the better choice.
