How to Care for Your Block Printed Cotton Dupatta
- First wash separately in cold water. Some natural dye release is normal in the first 2–3 washes. This is excess dye clearing — not fading. Always wash separately first to prevent colour transfer onto other fabric.
- Hand wash or gentle cold machine cycle. Avoid hot water — it weakens natural dye bonds. After the first few washes, a gentle cold machine cycle is fine.
- Mild detergent only. Harsh detergents strip natural dyes faster. A gentle handwash liquid is sufficient. Never use bleach.
- Dry in shade. Direct sunlight degrades natural dye molecules over time. Shade-dry to preserve colour depth and print vibrancy.
- Iron on medium heat, on the reverse. Cotton irons easily. Ironing on the printed side can flatten the print texture — so always reverse-iron.

A mulmul dupatta uses a very fine, open-weave cotton muslin — it is almost translucent, extremely lightweight, and drapes with a softer, more fluid fall. Mulmul is the better choice for peak summer occasions and outdoor events where physical lightness matters. Standard cotton is the better choice for occasions where you want the dupatta to hold a more structured drape — across the head, pinned at the shoulder, or folded deliberately.
