How to Care for Your Maheshwari Silk Suit Fabric
- Pre-wash before cutting and stitching. Cold pre-wash all three pieces separately before giving them to your tailor. This removes excess dye, pre-shrinks the cotton cambric bottom, and allows the Maheshwari silk to settle to its final dimensions before cutting.
- Silk pieces: first wash dry clean recommended. For the Maheshwari silk kameez and dupatta after stitching, dry clean for the first wash. This protects the silk warp structure and the natural dye’s initial setting.
- Cotton cambric bottom: cold hand wash. The cotton cambric bottom can be hand washed in cold water with mild detergent from the first wash.
- Never wring Maheshwari silk. The silk warp distorts when wrung. Press excess water out gently between clean towels instead.
- Dry silk pieces in shade, flat if possible. Direct sunlight degrades both natural dyes and silk fibre. Lay flat or hang gently in shade.
- Iron on low heat through a pressing cloth. Maheshwari silk requires lower heat than cotton. Always iron through a pressing cloth to protect the silk and the block print surface.

Why is the bottom piece cotton cambric rather than Maheshwari silk?
Maheshwari silk has a slight natural stiffness from the silk warp — which is what gives the kameez and dupatta their characteristic structured drape. However, this stiffness makes Maheshwari less comfortable for a salwar or trouser that sits against the legs all day. Cotton cambric is specifically chosen for the bottom because it is soft, breathable, and comfortable in sustained skin contact wear. It is also significantly easier for tailors to work with for fitted trouser or churidar cuts. The natural dye palette of the cambric bottom is coordinated with the Maheshwari kameez and dupatta, so all three pieces sit together as a coherent set.
