Women’s Equality Day

The Thread of Progress: A Founder’s Reflection on Women’s Equality Day

A Legacy Woven with Courage

As a woman who has poured her heart and soul into building a business from the ground up, I am intimately familiar with the quiet strength and unseen hours that go into turning a dream into reality. The journey is one of passion, but it is also one of persistence. This is why Women’s Equality Day, celebrated every August 26th, resonates so deeply with me.

This day marks the moment in 1920 when American women finally won the right to vote—a right that was not given, but earned through seven decades of relentless hope and unwavering protest. Yet, as we stand here in 2025, we know that the ink on that proclamation was not the end of the story. With projections showing that true gender parity is still over a century away, this day is both a celebration of the giants on whose shoulders we stand and an urgent call to accelerate action for the generations to come.

Celebrating the Trailblazers: 5 Women Who Redefined the Rules

The path to equality is paved by women who refuse to accept the status quo. They don’t just enter male-dominated fields; they revolutionize them. Today, I want to honour five such women whose brilliance and tenacity have reshaped our world.

1. Dr. Fei-Fei Li: The Visionary Who Gave Sight to AI

In the world of Artificial Intelligence, Dr. Fei-Fei Li is a true architect of our modern reality. She is the visionary who co-created ImageNet, the massive visual database that essentially taught computers how to see. Her work is a foundational pillar of the AI revolution, and as a co-founder of AI4ALL, she is dedicated to ensuring that the future of this technology is diverse and inclusive.

2. Donna Strickland: The Humble Genius Who Harnessed Light

In 2018, Donna Strickland became the first woman in 55 years to win the Nobel Prize in Physics. Her co-invention, a technique to create intensely powerful laser pulses, is now the foundation for everything from corrective eye surgeries to advanced scientific research. What’s most inspiring is her humility; she was still an associate professor when she won, having never applied for a promotion because she was simply focused on the work she loved.

3. Mary Barra: The Leader Who Broke the Ultimate Glass Ceiling

When Mary Barra became the CEO of General Motors in 2014, she didn’t just break a glass ceiling; she shattered it. In an industry defined by men, she rose from a co-op student inspecting car parts in 1980 to the very top, becoming the first woman to lead a major global automaker. Her story is a masterclass in dedication and transformative leadership.

4. Gwynne Shotwell: The Architect of the Stars

As President and COO of SpaceX, Gwynne Shotwell is one of the most powerful and influential figures in the new space race. Joining as employee number seven in 2002, her leadership has been instrumental in achieving the impossible, from the first private company to send humans to the ISS to landing reusable rockets. She is truly a pioneer, charting a new course for humanity’s future in the cosmos.

5. Dr. Jennifer Doudna: The Pioneer Who Can Rewrite Life’s Code

Dr. Jennifer Doudna’s co-discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool is one of the most significant biological breakthroughs in human history. These “genetic scissors” have opened up a new frontier in medicine, offering hope for curing genetic diseases. Her work earned her the Nobel Prize in 2020, cementing her place as a leader of a revolution that will impact lives for generations.

Our Own Small Contribution: The Spirit of a Woman-Made Dream

The stories of these women are monumental, but the spirit of equality is also found in the everyday. It is found in every woman who starts a business, every woman who leads a team, and every woman who supports another.

When I founded SA Fab, my dream was not only to share the beauty of our Rajasthani heritage but also to create a space that empowers and is powered by women. From the artisans who are the backbone of our craft to the team that brings our vision to life, SA Fab is a testament to what women can build. Our brand is a small thread in the vast, beautiful fabric of female empowerment, a story told in every hand-blocked print we create.

A Day for Action, A Lifetime of Belief

On this Women’s Equality Day, let us celebrate the trailblazers who have cleared the path. But let us also recognize the power within ourselves—to mentor, to support, to challenge bias, and to build a world where every woman’s potential is unleashed. The work is far from over, but together, we can continue to weave a future of true and undeniable equality.
