Block Printed Half Sleeve Shirts for Men — Hand Printed in Bagru, Jaipur

Every printed half sleeve shirt for men in this collection is block printed by hand in Bagru, Rajasthan. This is the village where the Chhipa community has practised natural dye block printing for over 450 years. A Chhipa artisan presses a hand-carved wooden block into natural dye paste and stamps the motif across pure cotton — one impression at a time. The result is a cotton half sleeve shirt for men that a machine cannot replicate exactly: slight variations in motif placement, natural dye depth, and a print character that only a hand-held block creates.

We use natural dyes throughout: madder root for deep reds and burgundy tones, indigo plant for blues and navies, harda seed for warm yellows and metallic brass tones, and iron solution for blacks and greys. Because these dyes contain no synthetic azo compounds, they are skin-friendly and they age well — deepening over time rather than fading flat.

All 16 shirts in this collection are made from pure cotton. No polyester blends, no synthetic fill. Pure cotton breathes in heat, wicks moisture, and stays physically cooler than any synthetic fabric in Indian summers. This makes our block printed half shirts the right choice for the full range of Indian summer occasions — from casual weekends to festive gatherings to resort travel.

What’s in This Collection

16 pure cotton block printed half sleeve shirts across four distinct print traditions. Here is how to navigate them:

Bagru Print Half Sleeve Shirts

Our Bagru print shirts carry the traditional Chhipa block print vocabulary — dense repeat motifs, floral trails, and traditional geometric grounds in the characteristic earthy madder-indigo-natural cream palette. Our Alice Blue Traditional Bagru Print and Deep Brown Floral Bagru Print shirts sit in this group. These are the most rooted-in-craft pieces in the collection. They work well for cultural events, festive casual occasions, and anyone who wants a shirt that carries a specific craft tradition rather than a generic print.

Sanganeri Print Half Sleeve Shirts

Our Sanganeri print shirts use the finer, more delicate floral vocabulary of the Sanganer block print tradition — smaller repeat motifs, lighter grounds, more botanical detail. Our Metallic Brass Sanganeri Print and Rich Plum Floral Sanganeri Print shirts are the most refined styles in the collection. Because the Sanganeri tradition uses a lighter touch than Bagru’s denser prints, these shirts read as versatile across casual, office, and festive settings. They are also the easiest to pair since the print is less visually dominant.

Kalamkari & Bold Motif Shirts

Our Black Kalamkari Style Block Printed shirt carries large-scale botanical and geometric motifs in the kalamkari tradition — a bolder, more dramatic print vocabulary on a pure cotton base. Similarly, our Black Magenta Zig Zag Jaipuri Print shirt carries a graphic geometric pattern that is the most striking style in the collection. These shirts are the statement pieces. They work best with plain, solid-colour trousers or shorts so the print leads without competition.

Small Motif & Everyday Shirts

Our small motif styles — Black Small Motif, Maroon Small Motif, Wood Brown Small Floral Motif, Burgundy Motif Print — carry quieter, repeat-pattern prints that work across the widest range of occasions. These are the most versatile shirts in the collection for daily wear and office environments. The print reads as considered and creative rather than loud. As a result, these styles are the right choice when you want the craft of a block print without a visually dominant statement.

How to Style a Block Printed Half Sleeve Shirt

Casual & Weekend Wear

A block printed half sleeve shirt worn open over a plain white or black inner, paired with straight-cut or slim denim, is the most accessible casual styling. The block print carries the look without needing accessories. For a more relaxed summer fit, wear the shirt buttoned and untucked over chinos or cotton shorts. Our floral and small motif styles — Sunspot Blue Floral, Beige Heritage Print, White Floral Print — are the easiest casual pairings in the collection.

Festive & Cultural Occasions

For festive casual occasions — Navratri, Diwali, family celebrations, cultural events — our Bagru print and kalamkari style shirts carry the right register. Pair the Alice Blue Traditional Bagru Print or Red Traditional Motif shirt with plain white or cream cotton trousers and simple leather juttis. The block print reads as deeply considered ethnic wear without the formality of a kurta. It is also a strong choice for couple matching outfits — pair with a block printed kurta or co-ord top in the same Bagru print palette.

Resort & Travel Wear

Pure cotton half sleeve shirts pack lightly and do not hold wrinkles. They stay comfortable through long transit days in heat and humidity. Our floral styles — Sunspot Blue Floral, Turkish Blue Floral, Rich Plum Floral — are the best resort choices because the print works across beach, market, and evening dinner settings without needing a different shirt for each. Moreover, because natural dyes do not run or transfer, these shirts handle luggage compression without colour damage.

Office & Creative Workwear

A small motif or Sanganeri print half sleeve shirt in a composed colour — beige, black small motif, metallic brass, wood brown — works well in creative and relaxed office environments. Tuck it into straight-cut trousers and the block print reads as deliberate and creative rather than casual. For more traditional office environments, our Beige Heritage Print and Metallic Brass Sanganeri styles are the most composed options in the collection.

What to Pair with a Block Printed Half Sleeve Shirt

With Plain Cotton Trousers

The most versatile and clean pairing. A solid-colour cotton trouser in a complementary natural dye tone — cream, black, indigo, beige — lets the block print shirt lead the look. This combination works across casual, office, and festive occasions without changing. The natural dye palette of our shirts coordinates naturally with plain neutrals from any wardrobe.

With Denim

A block printed half sleeve shirt over straight or slim denim is the most casual and contemporary pairing. Our small motif and floral styles work particularly well with denim because the print is contained enough not to compete with the texture of the denim weave. In contrast, our bolder geometric and kalamkari styles look better with plain trousers — the two strong visual elements (print and denim texture) can compete against each other.

With Cotton Shorts

For summer casual and resort wear, a block print half sleeve shirt with plain cotton shorts is the most relaxed combination. This works best with our floral and small motif styles. Wear the shirt unbuttoned over a plain inner for a laid-back summer look, or wear it buttoned and tucked for a smarter resort-casual finish.

Coordinate with a Partner

Several of our half sleeve shirt styles work as half of a couple twinning look — the man wears the block print half sleeve shirt while his partner wears a block printed cotton shirt or co-ord set top in the same print. Since our natural dye palette is consistent across the collection, prints from men’s and women’s categories in the same colour family coordinate naturally.

Why a Handblock Printed Cotton Shirt Is Different

Most printed shirts — even those labelled “block print inspired” — are digitally printed on cotton-polyester blends in automated factories. The print is uniform. The fabric does not breathe the way pure cotton does. And the “block print” is a digital file, not a wooden block pressed by an artisan’s hand. Our shirts are the opposite of that on every count.

We make every shirt from pure cotton — no blends, no synthetic fill. Pure cotton breathes, softens with every wash, and stays comfortable against the skin through full-day summer wear. The natural dyes we use also carry no synthetic coating on the fabric surface, so the cotton breathes even more freely than chemically dyed cotton shirts.

The printing happens in Bagru, at the hands of Chhipa community artisans who have inherited this craft across generations. We work directly with these artisans — no factory intermediary, no wholesale markup. As a result, fair wages go directly to the craftspeople and each shirt carries a real, verifiable origin: Ganga Vihar, Bagru, Jaipur — a 450-year tradition behind every motif.

How to Care for Your Block Printed Cotton Shirt

  • First wash separately in cold water. Some natural dye release is normal in the first 2–3 washes. This is excess dye clearing, not fading. Always wash separately first.
  • Hand wash or gentle cold machine cycle. Avoid hot water — it weakens natural dye bonds.
  • Mild detergent only. Harsh detergents strip natural dyes faster. A gentle handwash liquid is sufficient. Never use bleach.
  • Dry in shade. Direct sunlight degrades natural dye molecules over time. Shade-dry to preserve colour depth.
  • Iron on medium heat, on the reverse. Cotton irons easily. Ironing on the printed side flattens the print texture — so always reverse-iron.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the colours of hand block printed shirts exactly as shown online?

Natural dye colours are photographed in natural light — so the images are as accurate as possible. However, because we use natural dyes rather than synthetic ones, slight variations in colour tone exist between batches and individual pieces. Madder red can shift slightly warmer or cooler between dye batches. Indigo deepens over time with washing rather than fading. These variations are the hallmark of genuine natural dye printing, not a quality issue. In fact, they are what makes each shirt individual rather than identical to every other piece in the same style.

What is the difference between a Bagru print and a Sanganeri print?

Bagru printing is specific to Bagru village, Jaipur — the Chhipa community uses a resist-and-dye process with natural dyes in an earthy palette of madder red, indigo blue, and natural cream. The motifs are dense florals and traditional geometric repeats. In contrast, Sanganeri block printing (from Sanganer, also near Jaipur) uses finer, more delicate motifs on lighter grounds, traditionally with brighter dye colours. In our collection, both traditions use natural dyes — so the Sanganeri styles are distinguished by finer motif detail and lighter grounds rather than by synthetic dyes.

How do I choose between a relaxed fit and a regular fit for a block printed shirt?

A relaxed or box fit gives more room through the chest and shoulders and falls straight without tapering at the waist. This works best for casual and resort wear, and for anyone who prefers more physical comfort through the body. A regular fit follows the body more closely through the chest and tapers slightly at the waist. This creates a more composed, structured silhouette that works better for office and festive occasions. Since all our shirts are pure cotton, both fits breathe equally well — the choice is purely about silhouette preference.

Can I wear a block printed half sleeve shirt to a traditional ethnic occasion?

Yes — our Bagru print and traditional motif styles are specifically suited for ethnic occasions. The Alice Blue Traditional Bagru Print, Red Traditional Motif, and Deep Brown Floral Bagru Print shirts all carry a traditional ethnic register that works for Navratri, Diwali, wedding receptions, and festive family functions. Pair with plain cream or white cotton trousers and juttis for a complete ethnic casual look. For more formal ethnic occasions, our block printed kurtas are the more traditional choice.

How do I care for a half sleeve block printed cotton shirt to prevent colour fading?

Cold wash separately for the first 2–3 washes — some natural dye release is normal and expected. After that, a gentle cold machine cycle with mild detergent works fine. Always dry in shade — never in direct sunlight, which degrades natural dye molecules over time. Iron on medium heat on the reverse side only. With this care, natural dye colours deepen slightly with every wash rather than fading flat. A well-cared-for block printed cotton shirt can look richer after a year than it did on day one.
